Parish Council votes for speeding in our village
"What do we have to do to get some support from the relevant authorities for traffic speed control on Blenheim Hill and Didcot Road?
In 2004 the residents affected by the high speed traffic (*) on the two sections of road produced good attendance at the 'OCC Traffic Strategy Planning' meetings and took advice from those running those meetings. The advice given, was to produce a petition and send the results to the relevant authorities and local representatives. The residents did this and , although only a relatively small section of road, produced a petition of 40 signatures. It was duly sent to the 'advised' bodies.
The residents therefore viewed the traffic speed situation as serious.
What did we get: Two ugly posts (which will not be seen by the drivers 'doing the speeds' {what do they mean anyway}and some new road markings !!! Great, lots of tax payer money and ZERO effectiveness!!!
I was told by a local elected representative. That Traffic control measures had been 'diluted' by the Harwell P.C.. Why? I challenge these people to stand for one hour at the top of Blenheim Hill -- try Saturday a.m. or Sunday p.m.. Formulae One !!!
(*) The top of Blenheim Hill is a blind corner. The road space between A34 and this spot is designed to encourage drivers to build up speed, and then, they hit a blind corner with serious camber and then enter a small village.
The Police on their RARE checks say that there is not problem. There is no problem if 'PLOD' statistics are used i.e. The volume of speeding traffic is no greater than any village, OK, maybe so, but do they measure the differential between those vehicles that are speeding and the actual speed limit AND then compare that figure to other situations.
I promise you, and the video is just about to appear, that we have traffic traveling at 6o mph down Didcot Road/Blenheim Hill -- THE SPEED LIMIT IS 30MPH"

I've just been emailed from one member of the Parish who feels that speeding is a serious issue as our village is a short cut to several detestation's.
Her greatest complaint though was of the bus drivers who harass drivers through the village 'pushing' her faster, especially down the hill into Harwell and through the main street. She recalls one incident where a bus driver approached her very fast and braked only at the last minute to frighten her into going faster.
I agree with her and have experienced some of this myself. Anything large seems to rush through Harwell well over the speed limit – especially bad are the bus drivers.

in another email on this subject, we have been informed that the old folk of the unelected parish council - june blissett, jim and stuart lilly - didnt see speeding in our village as a problem.

We have a very large redevelopment of the area, and there is a huge pot of money out there for the road infrastructure and specifically for speeding and traffic control.
Our wonderful quango of an unelected Parish Council busy bodies have decided that they like the speeding and that we don't need anything bar a few daft wooden posts stuck into the banks to slow people down.
June Blisset, Jim Mulford, Stuart Lilly and the other Parish Council members just have not got a clue.
One could even speculate that they are representing their own personal positions (as if that was ever in question). Jim Mulford, for example, is a bus driver - most of the emails we have had on this subject are about speeding buses. A clear case of Jim Mulford condoning their actions, and condoning speeding in our village.
